I don´t really know where to start with this epic wedding so I will start at the beginning!

Mary first got in contact with me in June 2016.  I had been recommended to her by a great Irish Photographer and Videographer, Dougie Farrell from Silverscreen Weddings,  thanks Dougie, I still owe you a drink!!!

Being half Irish and having organised over 100 Irish weddings here in Spain, I was rather intrigued by Mary´s enquiry as she then explained to me her fiancee was wheelchair bound, so a challenge was set for me, and I love a challenge!

I have to be honest, this was the first wedding in over 10 years of being in business, where I had to consider a disability, so the search was on to find suitable venues which were wheelchair friendly and as it was going to be a Catholic church wedding, we also had to check out all the churches and see which ones offered easy access for wheelchairs.

Once I had gathered all the information that Mary and Marc needed they flew out to visit our final list of venues and churches and to make sure everything was accessible for Marc.  The only criteria Mary really had was something with a view of the beach and more modern rather than rustic, we always knew rustic was never going to work.

Their venue viewing visit duly arrived, I was so excited to meet with them having got to know them by email and phone calls and was intrigued as to which venue they would settle on.  After completing their venue tour with the help of a fabulous taxi driver, Diego, who had an wheelchair adapted car, they finally settled on the Melia Don Pepe Hotel as Mary and Marc adore the town of Marbella and had fallen in love with the venue.

The Melia Don Pepe is located on Marbella´s promenade which Marc found really easy to negotiate, and it is full of fabulous restaurants, beaches and hotels, it was the ideal location to base their wedding and to have other pre and post wedding get togethers.

I too love the Melia, it reminds me of when I was a child and my parents used to take me swimming there in the winter as it was the only heated pool at that time in Marbella, as well as the Marbella Club, so I have fond childhood memories of this hotel!

Now I am talking a long time ago as I am not a millennial!  The 5 Star Melia Don Pepe for me is quintessentially the old stylish Marbella, hugely popular with the upper class Spanish holidaying in Marbella and has a wonderful old world Marbella charm about it and the location is perfect for anyone wanting to stay in the actual town of Marbella.

So the venue was chosen, the date was set and after Mary and Marc had tested out the Encarnacion Church in the beautiful Old Town of Marbella to make sure Marc could access it we were ready to roll and plan the rest of their wedding.

I do have some very funny stories about this wedding as we had the second visit and our subsequent emails I got to know them so much better. From Marc getting very sloshed at the food tasting, as he was not used to drinking wine, which we still giggle about, to his 16 hour open bar demand!!!  The whole wedding planning process was just hilarious, fun and we became good friends leading up to their wedding.

So Mary and Marc finally arrived for their dream day and firstly stayed at the beautiful Amare Hotel, which Mary had also fallen in love with having stayed there on their previous trip.  They then transferred to the Melia for their wedding and all their guests started to arrive.  It was an exciting time and I was feeling rather nervous and emotional as so wanted everything to be perfect, I knew I was going to cry!

After a beautiful ceremony, where I did shed a tear albeit you can catch a glimpse of me smiling as Mary entered the church, it was a perfect day however in the afternoon the winds picked up and it was blowing an absolute gale.  This is quite common here particularly in June and September, which strangely enough are our busiest months but as always with the weather it is hit and miss.

We had to call a meeting as to whether to move the wedding inside or remain positive the winds would die down, as they often do here at sunset, and keep the wedding outside.  In the end we decided that the Irish did not come here to go inside so we kept the wedding outside and thankfully the gale force winds dropped ready for the evening 🙂

I cannot describe this wedding really apart from what a ball everyone had.  Mary and Marc had the best wedding ever and everyone had the most fabulous time, from a lovely cocktail in the gardens to a dinner overlooking the Mediterranean with, as you can imagine, some very heart felt speeches finishing with dancing later inside, the 16 hour open bar, a hugely popular donut wall and selfie mirror.

Mary and I are still in touch and remain good friends.

I feel very privileged to have created their dream day in Marbella and feel we were meant to meet.

Mary is such a kind, warm person and along with Marc, has been through more than we can even begin to imagine, it is not often you meet people that change your lives for the better and knowing what hoops these two soul mates have jumped through to get to this day is truly humbling.  I think the photos sum up the strength and determination these two share to enjoy life to the full and loved catching Mary stuffing a Burger King before her wedding!!

My thank you to all the suppliers involved including Regina at the hotel, Louise for hair and make up, Mary´s stunning dress was from Eliza Jane Howell from Frilly Frocks, the gorgeous shoes were from Ted BakerEntertainment by The Rivermen, Tristan with his Selfie Mirror, and of course to Salvador at Evergreen Bodas for these lovely images capturing such a special day.

A comment from one of my lovely travel writer friends this Christmas holiday really made me sit up.

He said he was off to check out my blog for some Christmas inspiration and I was really surprised when he said my decor and ideas inspired him.  I did not realise I had an avid following searching for design and style tips! (more…)

Help to get David Toms back home

I will start with going back to the day I found out about David Toms accident.  Utter shock, horror and could not get this off my mind, even to this day I often find myself thinking about David and wonder how he copes with the life changing accident he suffered, both mentally and physically.

Having broken his neck and now a quadriplegic, this situation challenges our understanding as to how anyone can move on and enjoy some quality of life, but they do.

Some of you may recall the blog post I did about David over a year ago a few months after his terrible accident.

A quick recap, it was about an amazing and inspiring couple, Mary and Marc, I had the pleasure of organising their wedding for.

They had faced a very similar life trauma when Marc also had a life changing car accident, at a much younger age.

It is very rare and probably never happened before that I have posted such a blog post but I am so angered by this situation so here it is in black and white and for everyone to read in the big wide world of the internet in the hope that word gets out and about of this utterly ruthless couple who are currently plaguing and taking the piss our of our wedding world.  Excuse my French!

Our Wedding World, as we like to call it here, is a very close knit community.  All the venues and suppliers know each other and we are like one big family, with a few exceptions, and we look out for each other.

Together, with Lucy from Boutique Weddings, one of my good friends, we set up a closed Facebook group about 2 years ago,  purely for all the wedding suppliers here in Southern Spain.

This past week Spain has had a heatwave, which is unusual for the middle of June, but temperatures have risen to the 40’s inland and over 30 on the coast.  This, my lovelies, is shade temperature 🙂

Many of my past clients have said to me “don’t worry we have nothing but clouds and rain here and are looking forward to seeing some sunshine and blue skies”.

Well this ain’t pleasant sunshine and blue skies, this is searingly fierce heat, it is like being locked in a sauna for the day!

It is no secret that the interior designer in me is a constant source of inspiration when it comes to applying aesthetics to our weddings.  I adore, and probably spend too many hours, poring over interior design trends and ideas.

I love interiors, from Modern to Moroccan, Mediterranean to English Country Garden or City Living.  All such different styles and each one provides a huge source of inspiration for me to apply to my work.  Give me cushions and I am in heaven!   (more…)

Hi everyone and welcome to the New Year!  I hope you all had a brilliant Christmas and New Year.

Here in Spain it is still a holiday with the 3 Kings tomorrow and one last weekend to relax and celebrate before all normality returns and the darling little kiddies go back to school, yay!!

I admit I switched off for a while from weddings as Christmas overtook me, which is always great as it allows me a bit of a breather and creative time.

It is not often I post about things like this but I do feel after the past few months that I need to sound my voice on a subject I had not really experienced before but wish to share it with you.

Our jobs, as wedding planners, means we meet people from all walks of life, some very wealthy in terms of life and money, others planning delightful weddings on a budget and sadly I have done weddings for terminally ill people. (more…)
