I will start with going back to the day I found out about David Toms accident. Utter shock, horror and could not get this off my mind, even to this day I often find myself thinking about David and wonder how he copes with the life changing accident he suffered, both mentally and physically.
Having broken his neck and now a quadriplegic, this situation challenges our understanding as to how anyone can move on and enjoy some quality of life, but they do.
Some of you may recall the blog post I did about David over a year ago a few months after his terrible accident.
A quick recap, it was about an amazing and inspiring couple, Mary and Marc, I had the pleasure of organising their wedding for.
They had faced a very similar life trauma when Marc also had a life changing car accident, at a much younger age.
After 7 years Marc had adapted and gained enough strength and confidence to travel and have their dream wedding in Marbella. Marc and Mary got married in September, we have yet to share this fabulous wedding with you as we are waiting for the photos but what an amazing and emotional day it was along with lots of confetti and donuts!
For those of you who missed this post I wrote about David last year, here is a link to it.
Moving on a year, David has spent the past year at a specialist spinal injuries hospital in Toledo, one of the finest in the world, but obviously after a year he had to move.
David was moved to a care home in Granada and whilst it is a wonderful establishment it is not suiting David´s particular needs and we are very sad to hear he has gone downhill rapidly since his move both mentally and physically.
The staff there are doing their best but David needs ongoing intense physio, to be near his friends and to be able to converse in English as his Spanish is not fluent.
The perfect place has been found for him much closer to his original home here in Marbella.
It is a fantastic 24 hour care facility in Alhaurin where he would have his own room, English speaking staff, access to wonderful gardens and even a pool bar. More importantly they will get him back on track physically with a team of specialists aimed at accelerating the recovery and mobility processes he still requires, as this is a long term rehabilitation to get David as far as he can possibly go. Having chatted to Mary and Marc, over many lovely get togethers whilst I planned their wedding, I understand this takes years, not just one year.
So here we are, David´s permanent disability status provides him with a small amount each month and paperwork is still work in progress but everyone is routing for David now to return home and here is where we need any help at all.
The costs to fund David in his new home needs to be met on a month to month basis so a monthly donation Paypal page has been set up.
This is a wonderful idea and it allows anyone, like me, to not have to shed out a large amount but to donate a comfortable amount each month towards David´s ongoing care. If we can get 500 people to commit to donating 10 euros a month this is 5000 euros. The cost of a few cups of coffee! If anyone needs help it is David so come on everyone, think about it, think if you can even afford 1 euro a month which I am sure you can this will all be life changing for David.
The link to the monthly Paypal donation is here and it really is very easy. I know many of his past brides and grooms would happily donate to this fund.
Tomorrow is David´s birthday, he is a few weeks younger than me and everyone wants him settled back near where we can visit him and he can start to rebuild a life so come on guys, hit that Paypal button and anything will be gratefully received. I am aware that some of his past couples were not aware of David´s accident until I did my last blog post a year ago so even if this post makes 2 couples of David´s donate it is worth it.
A few fundraisers are also planned now over the festive season.
One is at Tamisa Golf Hotel, the very generous John Peach has organised a fund raising night on the 25th November. A 3 course dinner with half a bottle of wine and entertainment by the Rat Pack is 40 euros per head, of which 20 euros per head will be donated to the David Toms fund.
You can make a reservation directly with Tamisa Golf on 952 585 988 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you wish to see how life changing this has been for David, here is a video made a year ago now but it really hits home.
I am in tears, please do think about donating on a month to month basis, every tiny amount will help, life can change literally in an instant and we can change a life by hitting a Paypal button xx
